Although all the Bronte children became obsessed with the worlds they created, Branwell continued to be haunted by the worlds which had been created by the Brontes.

Branwell also suffered a difficult childhood due to the strictness of his father and tragedy within the family. Branwell and his sisters lost their mother and a sister. While Anne, Emily, and Charlotte left home to pursue schooling and employment, Branwell was taught at home by his father.

A number of efforts were made to advance Branwell in the world, even though the Brontes had very little money to help Branwell. Unfortunately, Branwell was unable to gain lasting and gainful employment.

There is historical evidence that he abused drugs or alcohol and may have caused some scandal through his love affairs.
